The product
What is lowbrowse?
lowbrowse is a news app in development, built for calm, verified news without sensationalism, engagement algorithms, or ads. It is designed to pick the previous day’s news events, check each claim against the articles that reported them, and present each story as a short card that links to its sources.
How is lowbrowse different from other news apps?
Three ways. No engagement algorithm decides what you see. Every claim links to the source it rests on, with the exact quote. And every card has a dispute button. We optimise for being checkable, not for keeping you scrolling.
If there is no engagement algorithm, what decides what I see?
Not an algorithm tuned for engagement. There is one edition a day, and a person approves and selects every card in it. Everyone reading in the same language gets the same cards in the same order.
Trust & verification
How does lowbrowse verify news?
Each claim is taken from the articles together with the exact quote it rests on. Code confirms that the quote really appears in the article, and a language model checks the claim against all the articles collected for the story. Only claims the articles support are stated as fact; open questions are listed as unknowns. A person approves every card before it is published. The methodology page describes each step.
Is lowbrowse politically neutral?
We do not aim for a political position — we aim for checkability. Every claim is checked the same way, whoever it is about, and parties and people are described by what they did, not placed on a left–right scale. If you think a card is wrong, every card has a dispute button.
Does lowbrowse use AI?
Yes. Language models pick the previous day’s events, pull the claims out of the articles, check each claim against the articles and write the card. Code confirms every quote, every claim links to its source, and a person approves every card before it is published. You never have to trust a model; you can check the work.
Can I dispute something lowbrowse publishes?
Every card has a dispute button. Disputes are not reviewed yet.
Which sources does lowbrowse use?
News articles. The events come from Event Registry, a service that groups articles from many news outlets. For each event, the text of up to ten articles, each from a different outlet, is collected, and every claim on the card links to the article it comes from.
Practical
Can I use lowbrowse yet?
Not yet. The iOS app is in internal testing. There is no public beta, release date, or price yet. Get notified when lowbrowse launches.
